General Honors in Arts and Sciences

Truman offers the General Honors in Arts & Sciences program as a way of recognizing those students who choose to accept challenge and who demonstrate excellence in the breadth and depth of the liberal arts and sciences. ALL Truman students are eligible to pursue General Honors and like all Truman students, General Honors students can take small classes, interdisciplinary seminars, study abroad, and pursue many research opportunities, including a senior capstone course experience for all students. General Honors courses tend to explore in-depth topics or encourage a more sophisticated viewpoint than the usual introductory-level courses in the liberal arts and sciences. You are invited to join the more than two hundred Truman students who have chosen to take challenging and exciting courses to complete the General Honors in Arts and Sciences program.

The requirements for receiving General Honors in Arts and Sciences are:

Complete five approved courses in the areas of mathematics, science, humanities, and social science with at least one course from each area; and earn at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA overall and in these five courses.

Only grades of "A" and "B" may count toward the 3.5 minimum grade point average requirement in the five approved General Honors courses Also, only courses with three or more hours of credit may count toward General Honors.

Students who complete a single undergraduate major may not satisfy General Honors requirements with any course in their major field. (For example, a student whose only major is mathematics may not use any course carrying the MATH prefix to satisfy General Honors requirements.)

Students who complete two or more majors may use any approved course to satisfy General Honors requirements.

No credit toward General Honors shall be given for high school courses, transfer courses (included AP, CLEP, Study Abroad or substitutions) unless approved by the General Honors Committee.

Many General Honors courses have prerequisites or co-requisites. Refer to individual course descriptions for specific details.
